Last week wasn’t very rich in events. Like everywhere in the world we mostly have corona news. We keep doom scrolling site after site, looking for remedy and vaccine updates.
The number of new cases in Russia keeps growing: we have from 9000 to 11000 new cases every day. So far our country is the second after the US, having the total of 290678 corona cases. Deaths: 2722.
In St. Petersburg there were 425 new cases within the last 24 hours, that makes the total of 10887 cases in our city.
Orphaned Angel
Among those who died of corona last week was a well-known St. Petersburg artist Roman Shustrov. His most famous work – St. Petersburg Angel – has become an informal symbol of our city.
Unfortunately Izmailovsky Garden, the home of the Angel, is closed for visitors as well as many other public gardens, so I don’t have any recent photos of this sculpture, but you can easily find a lot of pictures of the Angel taken by guests of St. Petersburg in different seasons.
The Angel appeared in Izmailovsky Garden in 2012. It’s sitting on the back of a garden bench and reading a book under an umbrella. The sculptor himself used to say the Angel symbolizes retired citizens, who have gone through wars, hunger and sufferings but kept their love of life, purity and inner light.
The Angel happened to be the first artist’s work in bronze ever, and a very successful one. The citizens immediately fell in love with the Angel. Kids try to take a peep in the book the Angel is reading, some locals bring knitted scarves for it, others leave a coin on its lap. Now through the garden fence one can see flowers surrounding the orphaned Angel.
Mariinsky Theatre Starts Selling Tickets
Mariinsky Theatre isn’t very optimistic about the corona epidemic in Russia. The ticket sales opened again last week but it’s only possible to get tickets for the performances starting from September 1. The tickets are available directly at the official Mariinsky Theatre website.
Hypermarkets During Corona
The lockdown situation in Russia is now quite ambiguous. On one hand the president announced the ease of the corona restrictions. On the other hand he said the governors of each region have to make decisions about that basing on the current situation in each region.
St. Petersburg governor decided to allow two big malls to open their clothes shops and supermarkets. However they stayed open less than 2 days: they gathered such crowds of people forgetting about social distancing and precaution measures, that a decision was made to close the shopping malls again.
Public transport keeps working, grocery stores and pharmacies are open. Besides, construction and some industry resumed their work. We are waiting till the end of May to see how the situation develops.
