St.Isaac’s cathedral

The icon of St. Petersburg skyline, St. Isaac’s Cathedral is one of the world’s largest and most ornate churches.

The present day St. Isaac’s  is the fourth and final version designed by Auguste Montferrand. It was the major construction in the 19th century St. Petersburg and took 40 years to complete. In those days St. Isaac’s became the principal church of Russia and could take up to 14 thousand people standing at a time for the services. In the Soviet period the cathedral was designated a museum of anti-religious propaganda.

Nowadays the cathedral partially is an active church and partially it’s a religious art museum, filled with hundreds of impressive 19th century masterpieces. Inside it is adorned with gold trim, natural semi-precious stones, mosaics and paintings.

The colonnade of St. Isaac’s provides a stunning bird’s eye view of central St. Petersburg.
